What Makes Up Cannabis?

Although cannabis has a reputation of making you relaxed, sleepy, and of course high, many people don’t recognize that cannabis is actually a highly complex plant. There are over 400 chemical entities or compounds found in the cannabis plant with over 60 of them being classified as cannabinoid compounds.

Strains Dispensary is here to go over some of the basic and well known components of the cannabis plant so you can be better informed on the effects that you feel when it’s time to unwind with your favorite strain.

Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids are natural chemical compounds found in resin produced in the glandular trichomes of the cannabis plant. Basically, they interact with your body through the receptors that are actually part of our body’s natural endocannabinoid system.

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is considered to be one of the most well-known cannabinoids found in cannabis. The main classifications of cannabinoids include:

  • Phytocannabinoids- found in stalks, leaves, flowers, seeds, and live resin
  • Endocannabinoids- these are the cannabinoids that our own body produces
  • Synthetic Cannabinoids- these are created in a lab kind of like a prescription medication

Terpenes

Terpenes are also produced in the same glandular trichomes as cannabinoids. They are responsible for the aromatherapy found in a lot of plants and natural substances. Terpenes are used to create the distinctive smell of different cannabis strains.

Flavonoids

Flavonoids are also found throughout nature, from flowers to fruits, and vegetables. Flavonoids contribute to the pigmentation as well as the flavor of a specific cannabis strain and provide therapeutic benefits as well as antioxidants.

Flavonoids work with cannabinoids and terpenes to interact with our chemical receptors through the body’s endocannabinoid system. They can also act as anti-inflammatories and antibacterial agents.
