What is Kief?
The cannabis plant is covered in trichomes which are resinous glands that contain compounds like THC, CBD, terpenes, and more. Kief is the result of the trichomes drying and breaking off of the plant in the form of a powdery substance.
Kief is typically darker in color than the actual plant and is somewhat sticky. Kief is commonly collected in the bottom of a grinder as a result of grinding up the cannabis plant. Grinders have a separate chamber at the bottom that is referred to as a “kief catcher”.
Can You Use Kief?
The answer is yes, kief is actually somewhat of a treasure for avid smokers because it is a lot stronger than the cannabis plant itself since it is so concentrated. Not only can you add kief to bowls or joints for an added kick, but it can also be pressed into hash.
You can even purchase kief at the dispensary, but keep in mind that it will have a lighter color because it most likely won’t have as much of the plant mixed in.
How to Use a Kief Catcher
First off you’ll need to make sure that your grinder is either a 3-piece or a 4-piece because that means it’s equipped with a kief catcher. Once you grind up your weed the trichomes will fall off of the nugs and into the bottom of the grinder where it is stored as your kief.
It takes a bit of time to collect kief crystals especially if you are using a new grinder or if you just began smoking weed. Kief builds up over time as you grind up your weed and ends up being a great resource if you are running low on stash.
