At Strains Dispensary, we get a lot of questions; one we’re asked frequently is whether today’s weed is more potent than in the past. We’re happy to bring you the answer along with a little more information on what Perris stoners can expect from today’s more potent strains.

Weed Potency Now vs. Then

It’s not just you; today’s weed contains a lot more THC than the marijuana of yesteryear. Back in the 1970s, available cannabis typically had a THC concentration of less than 2%. Today’s strains average about 16% cannabis, with some strains and concentrates offering even more. Today’s flower also tends to contain fewer stems and seeds, leading to a more concentrated product.

The Dispensary Difference

Why is today’s weed more powerful? The simple answer is that marijuana growers have simply gotten better at cultivating high-THC strains. Legalization in states like California has also allowed growers more stability and freedom to experiment with different crossbreeds and growing conditions. Customer demand for more convenient ways of getting high has also led to the development of vape concentrates and edibles that contain high THC percentages.

Is Potent Weed More Dangerous?

While weed is still a relatively safe drug, it’s still important to exercise caution, especially if you haven’t partaken in a while. Talk with your doctor about how marijuana use may impact you and only use in a safe, comfortable environment.

Consider starting with a lower-THC strain or small-dose edible; the budtenders at Strains are always happy to provide a recommendation. Most importantly, start small and wait for your first dose to hit before you take another.

California law requires that cannabis products list any cannabinoid present in a concentration above 5%. This includes THC, CBD, and other compounds like CBN or THCV. If you can’t find the percentage listed on the label, ask your budtender for help.
